The cadets, Monique Pacheco, Thomas McDougald, Megan Criscione, and Anthony Pinapfel, attended the launch as guests of Perdew, a NGYCP national spokesperson since March 2004. Perdew highlighted the program in his new book, Take Command: 10 Leadership Principles I Learned in the Military and Put to Work for Donald Trump and included his volunteer work with the NGYCP in the book's "Selfless Service" chapter. In addition to meeting "the Donald" and George Ross, also of The Apprentice, two of the cadets joined Perdew on the FOX News Channel's Fox & Friends earlier that morning for a five-minute segment about the program.
The NJ Youth ChalleNGe Academy held its first annual Family Fun Day on 21 May 2005. The event was held as a fundraiser and to provide the cadets and their families an opportunity to enjoy some food and recreation at Willow Pond Park on Fort Dix. There was an all-you-can eat buffet as well as carnival-style games and prizes. With the help and supervision of ChalleNGe Social Studies Teacher, Mr. Paul Wityk, the cadets built and painted the games, in addition to setting up the event and breaking it down afterwards. Thank-yous go out to the following companies for their donations and/or greatly reduced prices: Six Flags, Herr's Potato Chips, Pocono Produce and Wirth Lumber. Thank you also to the staff members who assisted in the event and most importantly to the families who came out making it the enormous success that it was.
NJ Youth ChalleNGe Cadet Wins Regional Contest
Recently, ChalleNGe academies across the country participated in the "2005 Do the Write Thing Challenge", an essay contest sponsored by the National Campaign to Stop Violence. The purpose of the initiative is to create awareness in an effort to end violence to and by young people. The Eastern Regional winner of the contest was our own Cadet Michael Lowe, Jr., of the NJ Youth ChalleNGe Academy. In July, the regional winners will be invited to Washington, D.C. to read excerpts of their writings and to discuss the problem of youth violence with our nation's leaders.
